Auggie had the unfortunate luck to sniff the wrong place at the wrong time. We will never know why he obtained the fungal infection nor we will ever learn when or where. The Veterinarians didn’t realize what was wrong with Auggie until after the viral infection spread to his spine and brain. After Auggie death we tested our other boxer and our friends tested their boxers through Oregon State University c. gatti cryptococcosis research , all the dogs came up negative.
Cryptococcus gattii is a fungus that lives in the environment in many tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world as well as British Columbia and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. C. gattii cryptococcosis is a rare infection that people can get after breathing in the microscopic fungus. The infection can affect the lungs, central nervous system, or both.
Dr. Regina Tobian of Cascade Veterinarian referral Clinic along with Dr. Robert Kroll of VCA Northwest Veterinarian in addition to our main veterinarian clinic Crossroads Veterinary Hospital have been educating their peers in hopes to catch this fungal infection in the future.
